Life in the Coldest Inhabited Place on Earth
Located deep within Siberia, Oymyakon holds the title of the coldest inhabited place on Earth. This remote village in Russia’s Sakha Republic regularly experiences temperatures plunging to -50°C (-58°F) and even lower during winter. In fact, Oymyakon once recorded a temperature of -67.7°C (-89.9°F) in 1933, setting one of the coldest temperatures ever documented outside Antarctica. Surviving here requires a remarkable resilience to the harsh conditions and an extraordinary adaptation to one of Earth’s most extreme climates.
Life in Oymyakon is dictated by the relentless cold, with residents living in well-insulated homes designed to withstand the freezing temperatures. Traditional Russian stoves heat these homes, often burning wood or coal to keep out the intense cold. Villagers bundle up in thick, layered clothing, and cold-weather transportation like snowmobiles and sleds help them navigate the icy terrain. The nearby Indigirka River freezes solid in winter, turning into a natural roadway for residents and a popular spot for ice fishing.
Because of the permafrost, it’s impossible to grow crops, so the local diet heavily relies on meat, particularly reindeer and fish, which provide the necessary nutrients and energy for survival in the extreme cold. Schools, markets, and other public spaces operate with schedules that are often flexible, depending on the severity of the weather.
