Rising to a formidable 28,251 feet, K2 is known as the world’s most dangerous mountain, and with good reason. Located in the Karakoram Range on the border between Pakistan and China, K2 stands as the second-highest mountain in the world, second only to Mount Everest. Despite being slightly shorter than Everest, K2’s extreme conditions, challenging terrain, and unpredictable weather make it a far more perilous climb, earning it the nickname, “The Savage Mountain.”
The ascent of K2 is fraught with nearly vertical rock faces, towering ice walls, and treacherous ridges. Unlike Everest, there are no “easy” routes, and climbers face severe technical challenges from the moment they begin their ascent. Weather on K2 is notoriously unpredictable, with sudden snowstorms, high winds, and extreme temperatures often catching climbers off guard. Additionally, the steepness of K2’s slopes means there is little margin for error; one misstep can have fatal consequences.
Avalanches, rockfalls, and icy slopes are a constant threat, and the mountain’s infamous “Bottleneck”—a narrow, steep section close to the summit—is particularly dangerous. This stretch has claimed many lives, as climbers must navigate under hanging glaciers with the risk of ice collapse. As a result, K2 has one of the highest fatality rates of any mountain, making it a test of both physical endurance and mental resilience.
